Protectionism made sense when the country was starting industrialization. It does not make sense now. If countries are cheating on trade then selective tariffs may be effective when all else fails.

Protectionism will always make sense because it prevents jobs from going overseas. The only people who oppose protection are cosmopolitan globalists who profit from exploiting labor.

The problem is other countries retaliate. Those who know history know protectionism destroys jobs. But no bad idea stays dead forever. Bad ideas are always subject to being revived.

How a long for the days when only 5% of American "trade" was foreign.

Indeed, would Southerners have been as willing to aid Britain and France and go to war had a Republican President rather than a Democratic President (FDR) was pushing for this?

Off-topic, but I have a question for you, Steve--you previously pointed out that the Southern U.S. was the most pro-intervention region in the US in 1939-1941. Do you think that this would have still been the case had a Republican rather than a Democrat been in the White House?
