        Let's hope their citizens never need refugee status. Or rather, let's hope that if they do, other countries recognise the need to provide refuge.

        I am not sure aging, fucked up Japan is a great example. Perhaps a sweet spot of immigration somewhere between 20 and millions?

        The cultural nationalist argument is weakened when it gets mucked up with racial essentialism (rather than realism about modest distributional differences) and actual xenophobia.

        Immigration, like much else, is defined by an inverted U curve. Something between extreme cultural insularity and naive dismissal of the functional utility of broadly common culture. Assimilation/amalgamation, not naive multiculturalism or a white ethnostate.

        9 refugees short. Indeed, it's going to be a challenge to make up for this in 2018. Of course, as they say, most Japanese appear to prefer population decline to being swamped by Filipinos or Syrians.
