Greatly enjoyed this review and your writing generally. I'd be very grateful for any pointers towards the kind of history books, besides Gibbon, where one can avoid usual liberal bias. I'm particularly ignorant of Frederick the Great, whose name keeps coming up lately?

I confess I have not read Pinker's book - But I have long assumed that the developed world's precipitous decline in fertility (and thus in availability of young men) played the critical role in the decline of crime, and the decline of warfare. Downside - see "Children of Men".

A good take, however some of this hasnt aged well in the last 7 years "The Soviet Union is gone. Having dodged that bullet, it would be awfully stupid...to blunder into World War III now" And "[to most countries] war is a bore" Neocons are hard at it reversing that trajectory.
