Nothing? I seldom hear new popular music that sounds alien to my late Boomer ears the way my era's music was unlistenable to my parents. Creativity and change these days goes into other fields (e.g., games), while music has been stuck in stylistic ruts (like hip-hop) for decadeshttps://twitter.com/FakeEvrope/status/967235631154741249 …

This is a big chunk of Mark Fisher (kpunk)'s critique of modern music - it is mostly pastiche. To be fair, there is some really neat hip-hop going on at the fringes; and as cringe-y as it sounds, I admit I got "into" intellectual pursuits almost exclusively because of hip-hop.pic.twitter.com/tnazFLS3W3

That’s why Bruno Mars is so popular. He would sound great in the 70s and will sound great in 2050.pic.twitter.com/Hq8qSJyj6G

Media monopoly on distribution. You can find independent artists making innovative music on youtube but its cheaper and easier for corporations to massively promote a handful of artists. I think too there is the degeneracy agenda to consider.

Compare popular music from 1970 to 1980. Sea change. Now compare music from 2018 to 2008, no difference.

1977 to 1982, huge change in popular music in those 5 years.

In the last ten years or so, I've heard a lot of tracks that made me think, "If this came out when I was in my teens or twenties, I might have really liked it but now it's just kind of meh."

For a long time before then, I noticed I was hearing a lot of tracks that sounded like covers to me and tried to remember who did the original. Then I'd learn it was an original but very derivative, creating the illusion you'd heard dozens or hundreds of times already.

Vaporwave and other forms internet music is just about the only thing that sounds legitimately alien and weird sometimes. Perhaps unsurprisingly, it's the kind of music that's also most associated with the alt-right, further cementing us the cultural avant garde of the 2010s.

Some exaggeration: all the stories, all the music, all the art has been done. What's left is to tinker and tweak and find minor variations on the same old themes.

Billboard music is now as formulaic as it was in the 1960's Frankie Avalon era.

Music as a creative force is over. Music is now mostly singers with a group of dancers recreating hooks and lyrical ideas that have been done 100 times over. The outer edges of the music scene are "pick a decade/style/sound" and hope that enough people to buy into the nostalgia.
