Wait a minute, how can Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem be two of the last 3 Latin Americans to win Oscars? Aren't they Spaniards, not Latin Americans? After #OscarsSoWhite, Hispanics Seek Their Hollywood Momenthttps://nyti.ms/2F3A1kh

If only those Mafia Dons back in the 70s had thought to start calling themselves Hispanic, the world would’ve been theirs

Hispanic includes Spanish people, I believe.

No, it does not. Spanish people are white Europeans and as such they are not Hispanic.

As a Canadian, the term Hispanic strikes us as bizarre in that there are Hispanics who are obviously white. Then again, we have our share of flight-from-white minorities here in Canada that Mr. Sailer has written about, those being our blond haired and blue-eyed native peoples.

This reminds me of that White kid from South Africa who got suspended from his school in Omaha, Nebraska in 2004 for entering the African-American Student of the Year contest at his school. Interestingly enough, though, he was the only student at his school who was from Africa.

As a Spaniard that has lived in the US I can guarantee you that we are all Hispanic except when it’s convenient to be white. In Europe though we are always white. Whiter than the Irish or the Poles. Ain’t identity politics grand.
