The Portuguese executed an 82-year R&D program from 1415 to 1497 to reach India: they stuck with it longer than USA stuck with NASA.https://twitter.com/dpinsen/status/905303992674246658 …

The NYT reviewer puts it down to simple ferocity plus better ships and guns. https://www.nytimes.com/2016/01/17/books/review/conquerors-how-portugal-forged-the-first-global-empire-by-roger-crowley.html … He reflects modern P.C. biases though. pic.twitter.com/EaQRgYSZiw

To extend the NASA metaphor, the Portuguese' base in India facilitated even more distant conquests, such as Malacca and Macau. 1/2

Had it gone like NASA, the Portuguese would have needed to bum rides from the Spanish to get to Madeira 50 years later. 2/2

The basic idea seems to have come from Dias or his pilot. Hugging the African coast all the way wasn't working.
