So let me get this straight, according to the New York Times, Warren's DNA results possibly reveal that she's possibly *less* Native American than the average white American? Amazing.https://twitter.com/michael_ahrens/status/1051843481013014528 …

You didn’t get it straight though. The test revealed that she falls in a range between 1/64 and 1/1024. Her family (most of them GOP) believe her mother was 1/32 Cherokee which happens to be the same as current Chief of Cherokee Nation.

The .18% mentioned in the NYT should not be compared to .09%. That number would be .35%, or the actual amount of Native DNA found. (25 cM.) The report says her result was 12- and 10-fold higher than the reference population.

The reference population that Bustamante used for his analysis of Senator Warren's DNA is Utah whites (i.e., Mormons), who were chosen because they are especially almost 100.0% European. In contrast, an Amerindian ancestor is not uncommon among Scots-Irish whites.

Lots of whites in Oklahoma are a little bit Indian by ancestry. E.g., NFL QB Sam Bradford, Heisman winner at U. of OK, is 1/16th Cherokee and looks it.pic.twitter.com/7rifOiiZKk
