Warren is a law professor from Oklahoma, so she surely knew that the Cherokee have a bright line system for determining who gets to call themselves a Cherokee and that she definitely didn't qualify.

If I'm doing the arithmetic correctly, Senator Warren's geneticist's finding that she had a single American Indian ancestor about 8 generations got makes her 1/256th or 0.4% Native American. 8 generations ago would be a single great-great-great-great-great-great grandparent.

This implies that one of Senator Warren's great-great-great-grandmothers was about 1/8th Indian but nobody in her family would ever forget it: "Make sure that Great-Grandma gets sarsaparilla and not corn likker, or she'll go on the warpath, cuz you know how those redskins are."

isn't 6 to 10 gens "before the sample" 1/64th to 1/1024? Why are so many people saying 6 to 10 gens is 1/32 to 1/512? 1 gen = 1/2, 2 gens = 1/4, ..., n gens = 1/2^n

How is that even possible time-wise unless some ancestor crossed over the Bering Strait to mate with a European? Warren is almost 70 so wouldn't that ancestor have to be before Columbus?
-
The issue wasn't whether or not Warren has a few genes of NA blood coursing through her veins but that she "checked the box" on a form saying she was NA & that would give her an advantage as a minority & she knew she really wasn't. It was dishonest, period.

Right and she's a lawyer. She knew those details matter and she knew that being "Native American" was a career asset.

At which point a possible ancestor is indistinguishable from a European ancestor taking a cosmic ray to the gonads.

- Eight generations before you will equal one 1/256th per ancestor, but then YOU are 9th generation. - If you're 8th gen yourself, it's 1/128, or about .0078: a bit under 1%. (Still minuscule, but, you know.)

The average European measures that much or more Amerindian DNA just due to prehistoric commonalities with Siberian ancestors. Doesn't mean there was a "100%" ancestor in historic times

The media's take on this is that Warren has been vindicated.

So how do we know the sample tested by Bustamante was actually Warren's? For this to be conclusive she'd have to give samples of immediate relatives and her own taken under clinical circumstances. This was such an embarrassment for Warren she has every reason to deceive.

It's unclear whether Bustamante means Warren is eighth of eight generations, or is counting eight generations back (making her 9th generation). I suspect the former, as otherwise we're talking about a Cherokee at the dawn of time in the 1600s.
