Not sure how it happened, but Halloween seems to have become the defining American holiday. Because it’s the only one that is an explicit celebration of individualism and the person? Still working on a theory.

I understand and appreciate its harvest origins, but I don't really understand Halloween's widespread appeal (kids excepted) as it is expressed today. It's inorganic, commercial and corporate. Maybe that's enough, but it's hopelessly shallow.

It's way bigger than when I was young when it was strictly for kids. It's had an association with the occult for a long time, and as our society has gradually moved away from religious holidays like Christmas and become more secular, Halloween has flourished.
