Back on 11/29/2000, I suggested what became the Trump Strategy -- pursuing Reagan Democrats in the Upper Midwest -- but until 2016, the GOP Brain Trust thought it a lot sexier to pursue Mexicans, even though the payoff in Electoral Votes would be small. @NateSilver538https://twitter.com/NateSilver538/status/1050160327659270144 …

By far the Democrats' strongest region in Senate + Gov + House polling has been the Midwest, and I don't think you'd really gather that from the tonality of the reporting, which tends to fixate on demographic change and therefore finds races in the South & the West a lot sexier.

Gaining those votes was clearly key to Trump’s victory, but why do you think he’s losing them now even after all his Trade War actions this year?

No wall. No reduction in immigration. Ryan-esque stingy health care plan. And the usual off-year blowback against any sitting president.

The GOP brain trust, aside from being less intelligent than its liberal counterpart, has always been well compensated for its uselessness. It's not the voters who butter their bread.

The problem is it's becoming too late demographically for the Sailer Strategy to work.

Reagan's main rival in the GOP was George H.W. Bush, who's family dominated the GOP until Jeb's 2016 flameout.

When the GOP is a bunch of corporate whores, though, it appears to be kind of hard for it to maintain its appeal in the Midwest.
