Speaking of witchcraft (as Vox does), my new book review of "The Coddling of the American Mind" explains how African beliefs in witchcraft might influence concepts like "systemic racism" and "implicit bias." http://takimag.com/article/2013-a-race-odyssey/#axzz5TQ2bjzEI …https://www.vox.com/identities/2018/10/10/17952388/magic-ritual-spells-self-care-feminism-brett-kavanaugh?utm_campaign=vox&utm_content=entry&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter …

Oh definitely. Things like "The male gaze" "objectification" "stereotype threat" "structural oppression" "white privilege" etc. are all really just re-hashings of the Evil Eye.

Here in South Africa a great percentage of blacks raise their beds on bricks or paint cans in order to put themselves out of reach of a short demon called the Tokoloshe. They also tend to be deathly afraid of frogs and believe they are evil spirits.pic.twitter.com/89f4zs8D8U

Apropos of your article Steve my dad encountered a similar attitude to the Herero when he had his farm in South Africahttps://mobile.twitter.com/TechKaczynski/status/1036813248211963904 …

my dad's farm workers used to disappear all the time to go visit the witch doctor and he once asked them why didn't the witch doctors curse all the whites back to europe they said the magic didn't work on europeans because they "didn't believe in it"

Is this evidence that the culture broadly is becoming more African both physically and spiritually? Is the feminine embrace of pan-African ritual an extension of western Afro-fetishism, or perhaps something to fill the void left in the American/pan-European mythos? What is next?

Pagan ritual & "magic" can't be framed as anything except the exploitation of the ignorant. The early Christians were crucified for refusing to pay the local shamans for their protective fetishes. Big business for cons (I can read Tarot. It's a fascinating cover for manipulation)

I look forward to this. You’ve touched on the subject before, and the concept seems quite plausible to explain an otherwise confounding phenomenon.
