In Raj Chetty's map, you can see the dark red pockets of Indian reservation Tragic Dirt in the midst of all that Great Plains all white Magic Dirt. Seriously, though, if the term Tragic Dirt applies anywhere, it is to the Pine Ridge reservation in South Dakota.

Perhaps only tangentially related, but in 2 - 3 generations will the number of white pupils in California even reach double digits? How much of that has to do with cost of living? WI and MN are not expensive places to raise a family. If you work hard and get a middle class job it's easy to move up the ladder. A lot harder on Manhattan.
