Early 20th century America had an abundance of immigrant European craftsman that worked for low wages. By post war period most of these men were dead or retired. Labor shortage, high wages and housing crunch also contributed to mediocre architecture.

Future elites who spent their formative years in 1920’s America were impressive. Nicer than those who came before, but still tough, and with the most realistic worldview of any elite class that’s ever been. Very depressing, actually.
