3 problems with Patrick O'Brian's "Master & Commander" series of sea novels as a "Game of Throne"-style TV series: - Filming on water can be "Waterworld" costly - Aubrey & Maturin appeal to white males with 3 digit IQs - In our Diversity Era, this is a Great White Male workhttps://twitter.com/TheAtlantic/status/1041952496653086721 …

The fine 2003 "Master & Commander" movie, with Russell Crowe at his career peak as Captain Jack Aubrey, earned $93 million domestically, $212 mil globally. Not bad, but filming on water cost $150 million, so no sequel was greenlighted. Is there a cheaper way these days?

Seems the way to go would be to build models of the ship; small scale models for sailing shots (as was done for Hornblower), full scale model (or at least a deck & some interiors) for the actors to run around, eg the Starz tv show Black Sails.https://m.youtube.com/watch?feature=youtu.be&v=M9q6IcpGjlM …

Apparently, filming nautical movies on sets was common back in the days when lots of pirate films were made. I guess everyone just forgot you could do that once they got used to more “realistic” techniques. https://csphistorical.com/2016/02/07/editorial-black-sails-historical-accuracy-and-the-pirate-genre-in-hollywood/ …pic.twitter.com/cetvGnoSXi

Titanic might have given tanks a bad rap. We forget, but that movie was sort of a boondoggle during production.

I was driving to Ensenada in Baja California in 1996 when we passed a colossal 4 smokestack ship ... up on the seacliff instead of in the water. It was a flabbergasting sight. I realized it was James Cameron's set for "Titanic." Kind of inspiring in its insane expensiveness ...

The other key advantage of filming M&C as a mondo-budget TV series is that one of the key reasons why shooting nautical movies costs so much is that you basically have to build all the ships, sets, etc from scratch just for one movie, whereas on TV they last seasons.

Even Waterworld would have seemed less expensive in the long run if it had been a GoT-budgeted TV series set on the Atoll that ran for 4 seasons, spreading the initial set construction costs out over a much longer filming schedule.

Not sure what budget was, but AMC’s series “The Terror” did great job w/19th c. seafaring aesthetic. Has look & feel of “Master & Commander”. Despite weak 3rd act, J. Harris & esp C. Hinds shine. Series snubbed by Emmy's, likely due to Stale/Pale/Male casting & target audience.

The first half of the season was very good, my personal favourite this year by far. We need more seafaring on screen.

In the Heart of the Sea production budget was $100m. Didn't make money but kept costs a bit lower. Presumably CGI.

That was a terribly boring movie, and it looked a little fakey. But it doesn't look bad. It's convincing enough.

Yes, I agree. It was an odd concept - let's take the true story that inspired one of the greatest novels ever written, and then fictionalise that, only not quite as well as Melville already had. I was frequently restless.

Too bad we cannot find a way to reduce costs and greenlight films for the WM3DIQ set, and leave the high budget films for the diversity Flat Earthers set.

There are many excellent, unabridged audiobooks of both the Master and Commander & Hornblower series. Granted, it's not film, but all you need is one decent voice and maybe a few sound effects. Release them as chapter-long podcasts. Keeps your feet dry.
