This isn't hard to explain: The freer and richer (e.g., as in utopian Norway) human beings are to be themselves, the more the vast majority of them want to be able to fully express their masculinity if they are male or their femininity if they are female. Vive le difference!https://twitter.com/WiringTheBrain/status/1040904775540203520 …

Or maybe women in freer countries are more feminine. Remember, we're not comparing like with like here.

Not necessarily. Scandinavian women have been pretty badass going back to Leif Ericsson's sister Freyda Ericsdottir who terrified the Skraelings in North America back around 1000 AD. But, give them enuf money, and Swedish women want government jobs taking care of children.

Swedes, men and women, are famously placid in modern times. They bred the aggression out of themselves. Comparing them to, say, sub Saharan Africans brings a huge range of complicating factors.

Gender differences are minimized in agricultural societies in which hours and hours of labor each day are necessary just to keep your children from starving to death, as people are ground down under the Malthusian limit. Yay gender equality...?

Reminds me of the stereotype of the masculine old Russian woman who could fight a bear, chop down a tree, and down a fifth of vodka

There are lots of folk memories of women really toughening up to meet the demands of agriculture. Think of the cowgirl out west who is a tomboy and can't stand dainty city girls.

Also, in Ancient Greece: aristocratic women would stay indoors, let their skin stay pale, never much speak up. The poorer women would be outside selling goods or performing tasks, get a rich tan, yuck it up with the men only a relatively more egalitarian basis.

This. The idea of the purely ornamental woman was always an affectation of the upper classes - not the daily experience of the majority of humanity.

My theory is that men/women need to signal gender diffs in order to attract. For people living doing manual labor, the signalling is built-in bcz men are stronger. So you really don’t need a lot of “extra” symbolic signalling.

You’re always going to see different gender choices if men/woman are free to choose. But the only place really **artificially exaggerated and stylized** diffs have shown up is usually idle upper classes.

Very true. A weird side issue is how upper class men sometimes adopt stylized feminine traits. Sorry but I've never seen a portrait of an 18th century noble and thought he looked like Hulk Hogan. Long hair/wigs, slender frames, powdered faces, exquisitely groomed/dressed, etc.

I am continually astounded at how violently-held left wing presuppositions regarding various "socially-constructed" hierarchies (IQ, gender, race) all fall apart in accredited studies, to the chagrin of the left, and the utter lack of surprise of the right.

Sociobiological chances in more WEIRD countries (changes in genetic and hormonal makeup) also explain larger sex differences in personality and sexually selected traits (hip waist ratio, size) in more gender equal countries. Big results coming. http://www.oxfordhandbooks.com/view/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780190299323.001.0001/oxfordhb-9780190299323-e-30 …pic.twitter.com/LTC5xa57VZ

Alternate hypothesis: the more accepted homosexuality is in a society, the more straights will distance themselves from cross gender behavior.
