Definitely '87-'94 was the best stretch. Or more narrowly '88-'92. I say that as someone whose prime SNL age was in the Will Ferrell era, so I don't think I'm biased.
Lorne Michael says his grand strategy is too hook for life 13 year olds when they are first allowed to stay up with their friends and watch late night TV. But I was 32 in 1991, so I'm not all that age biased in saying SNL peaked then.
A friend whose Saturday Night Live expertise and judgment far exceeds mine praises 2007's cast as among the very best: Fred Armisen Will Forte Bill Hader Darrell Hammond Seth Meyers Amy Poehler Maya Rudolph Andy Samberg Jason Sudeikis Kenan Thompson Kristen Wiig
SNL would have been funnier during Obama years if they could have gotten Jordan Peele out of his Mad TV contract to be their Obama. But Mad TV, which wasn't using Peele much, didn't want to let a rival have him either. So SNL had to go at last moment with Fred Armisen as Obama.
That Key and Peele sketch where Obama switches back and forth between white and black personas based on whom he's talking to is perfect.
Did Norm Macdonald ever overlap with that cast?
yeah about half of them were still around when Norm debuted in the 93/94 season. They were all gone within a year or two though
Absolutely. Don't forget Dennis Miller. He was still there in '91.
