If you don't support free speech for people you disagree with, you're effectively declaring that you cannot come up with a counter-argument that is more compelling.

Not really. You could also be declaring that you know you’re right, that you have power, and that you believe you can make your enemies irrelevant by denying them opportunities to spread their faulty ideas because you believe that’s more effective than convincing morons.
