A generation ago in USA, a Ladino-speaking Sephardic Jewish broadcast station entrepreneur born in Poland was awarded a big tax break on a radio station purchase because a judge declared him Hispanic, in part because his ancestors had lived in Spain until 1492.https://twitter.com/Go321D/status/1034915960178667520 …

BTW, I have a great-uncle who was born in Argentina but is 100% Ashkenazi Jewish. Would it be fair game for him to identify as Hispanic if he'll ever move to the U.S.?

Daniel Seligman reported this amusing affirmative action story in his Fortune "Keeping Up" column on 8/10/1981 about how Liberman Broadcasting, a Sephardic-owned firm, qualified for a big tax break for being Hispanic. This tax break is a rare ethnic quota that has been repealed.pic.twitter.com/a6GxhxqyhK

Very interesting! Now,here's the crucial question: Did he actually have records to prove that his ancestors lived in Spain until 1492?

"Did he actually have records to prove that his ancestors lived in Spain until 1492?" Probably. Sephardic Jews tend to be able offer lots and lots of evidence that they are Sephardic: surnames, ability to speak Ladino, genealogical records, synagogue rolls, etc.

That's very interesting! Ofc, I wonder how much Ladino the younger generation of Israeli Sephardic Jews actually know.

Knew a girl in college in the early 1980s. Parents were German and emigrated to Mexico in the 1960s. Daughter born there and then later they then emigrated to the US in the late 1970s. Girl claimed she was Hispanic on all her applications even though she was 100% German ancestry.

Im Italian. If Spanish people from Spain who are genetically similar to me, emigrate to Mexico , for example, gets breaks, how come I don’t? Am I a Latina? It’s a Similar genetic make up. I just don’t get it! Why do Hispanics get a break and Italians don’t?

If I had kids born in Mexico, could they claim to be Latino/Hispanic? Because I know a woman with Italian heritage who was born in Argentina and her kids check the Hispanic box for college applications! It’s all BS!

Yeah this is why I am starting to think ethnic tax breaks or programs should be illegal. I shouldn't have to prove I am an ethnic...unless of course you demand foreign birth certificates. .which becomes totally absurd. Elizabeth Warren example..native? Fine..no gov breaks though.

It's all par for the course. I know a Scots-Amer. married to a Spanish woman who couldn't afford to put their kids tru college until they applied and got scholarships as "Hispanics." Also a J-Ashkenazi IT specialist who couldn't get work until he took on a a "Hispanic" partner.

Wait a minute, wait a minute! If those "white Latinos/Hispanics (what?) cross the border illegally and are caught by ICE, are ICE agents guilty of "racism" like the Left id screaming every time an illegal is apprehended at the border? Asking for a friend.
