What did @mattyglesias identify as in 2010? Hispanic or just White?
-
-
-
Previously, Yglesias had said he identified as Ashkenazi-American. But then Yglesias said he identified as Hispanic as his ethnicity on the 2010 Census. After all, his one Cuban grandfather was the CPUSA Daily Worker's film critic and then he was a Merck executive.
-
BTW, I have a great-uncle who was born in Argentina but is 100% Ashkenazi Jewish. Would it be fair game for him to identify as Hispanic if he'll ever move to the U.S.?
-
Did I oppress Argentinians? Going to have to check my diary.

King Henry VIII divorcing his Spanish wife Katherine of Aragon was deplorable, so you must pay affirmative action privileges in 2018 USA to anybody culturally related to Queen Catarina, like, say, Matthew Yglesias. And Ezra Klein, whose dad was born in Brazil: close enough!
-
It makes you wonder whether one should go on a vacation to Latin America when one or one's wife is about to give birth. After all, if your child is 100% non-Spanish White but born in Argentina or Uruguay, then that's probably good enough for him or her to get affirmative action.

If the average "black" person in the USA is ~25% white and the average "white" person is ~1% black, then it makes sense, from a clustering POV, for the dividing line between the two categories to be somewhere between those two percentages.

So it’s just whatever people say they are? Sounds like that’s not a biologically meaningful distinction if so.
-
From a legal standpoint, it's not biologically meaningful. There's nothing illegal about Rachel Dolezal or Shawn King checking "black". Obviously biology is still meaningful outside of the specific American legal context though.

"If a black person and a white person have children what race is the child?" Depends on how many bonus points you want. If a anon white person & a white person related to Pocahontas have children, then they can run for president!
