Or perhaps the Establishment theory on immigration has gotten crazier over time? President Eisenhower, for instance, was more actively anti-Mexican immigration than President Trump, rounding up and deporting tens of thousands in Project Wetback mass sweeps.https://twitter.com/davidshor/status/1034186635263520768 …

It's really more of a deeper thing that I think democracy basically only worked so well in the post-war era because ideological extremists on both sides acted as gatekeepers that kept crazy authoritarian populists from gaining political power

Some people are explicit in saying that the will of the population has to be stopped in order to protect liberal democracy. The liberal part apparently means minority rule. These people really think that most of the population are not fit to conduct the country's politics, and

that individuals like themselves have to filter everything first. In other words, you can not have real democracy. They are explicit in how the public has to be manipulated, lied to, denied a platform, and if all this does not work they need to be by any means denied their wills.

It's amazing how dishonest these people are too. Decades ago, the West did not face the current demographic threat. Japan, which is apparently free from extremism according to the geniuses, has always had the immigration and demographic politics of the dreams of the far-right.

Every establishment view has gotten crazier. In 2018 the Democratic leadership and the media would have us believe "white supremacy" is a greater problem today than in 1962, when the KKK was still a threat to the civil rights movement.

True about Eisenhower ... but what really gets me is that Trump's stated positions on immigration are virtually identical to those of Clinton in the 90s, and Obama in the 00s. Trump is just actually trying to do something about it, and doesn't mince words as much.

“Authoritarian populists”. How does that work exactly? What’s Trump done, or proposed to do that’s “authoritarian populist”?🤔 Immigration operates on non-citizens and foreigners. Is that what’s meant? It’s not “authoriarian” if citizens don’t notice.

He presents boilerplate nostalgia for the Liberal Consensus, with an ideological extremism twist. But he also abuses the "democracy" disease. If your democratic system excludes populism, maybe it's not actually very democratic. (populus and demos both referring to the people.)
