Doesn't Urbit do this?

Not really pseudonyms, though, they're server addresses, and much of the owning is the fact of physically grasping the box the server is in.
-
It should be anonymous, but with reputation attached, though (if I understand it correctly).
-
Yes, but it remains intricately tied to owning the actual box. If you want to start fresh you can buy a new box. Similarly, in any crypto pseudonym system, reputation below some threshold would be equivalent to a ban.
-
E.g. reputation on ebay below about 90% is functionally a ban. But you just make a new account.
-
Doesn't this work the same way in meatspace, minus the respawn?
-
Losing the respawn is kind of a big deal. Even moving cities, which is a good facsimilie, is far more expensive than getting a new Urbit instance.
-
Won't that change with scarce real estate?

The real problem is that most people let enough personal details out that a determined attacker will figure out who is behind that pseudonym eventually

There is something like that, called Namecoin, but it hasn't really caught on. Also cryptographic signing has been around for a long time.
-
Technically Namecoin names aren't permanent (they expire if not renewed periodically), but adding permanence to Namecoin isn't that hard (not even a consensus fork) if you're willing to append a short "epoch" number to a name. One of the many things on our roadmap. -Jeremy

Practically speaking, you can tweet a public key, or otherwise post to some other public archive which keeps date information. But I think having to fight for one's handle might be a feature.

If the Internet is the Wild West, I think the railways (which made the cowboys obsolete) are just short of being completed. There's not much of a market for copyrighted, secure handles just yet, but we'll be there sooner than we'd think.

What if we all decided to adopt the same legal names and vowed to do the same for our kids? Then NO ONE needs a pseudonym. I suggest 'Humberbolt Cornwellingford' for men and 'Mitzy McMorningshire' for ladies. Problem solved.

Isn’t that already when people identify themselves as a # on Keybase?
