This 1989 picnic on the border, organized by Archduke Otto von Habsburg, last heir to the Austro-Hungarian Empire, sprang a fatal leak in the Iron Curtain that eventually led to the fall of the Berlin Wall that November.https://twitter.com/HistoryNed/status/1031130224149364736 …

Absolutely none of the US geopolitical experts predicted it nor understood the significance as it happened. They had complete and total faith in GDR apparatchiks until the bitter end. And we STILL have a Cold War hangover in the Swamp.

Maybe the Hapsburgs should directly control the EU. Their past fending off the Turks means they'd be more reliable than Juncker or Merkel!

What's interesting is that Otto von Habsburg, the last Crown Prince of Austria-Hungary, outlived Austria-Hungary by over 92 years! He was almost six years old when Austria-Hungary collapsed and broke up and was 98 years old at the time of his death.

I remember it well. Kudos to Steve for bringing it back to attention especially dear passed away old Otto, whose hands in the fall of the curtain remain unremarked till today.
