L.A. food writer Jonathan Gold was born in the 1960s. I guess that was after the L.A. of Goldwyn, Mayer, Selznick, Warner, Cohn, Fox, Zukor, etc. Weird old ethnic resentments about long ago WASPs drive a lot of the sacralization of immigration today that so dumbs down discourse.https://twitter.com/thesyrianrebels/status/1020895131409567744 …

Yeah, those terrible hard working white Protestants that made LA safe, orderly, clean, productive, attractive. Thank god they got replaced. 🙄

There was just enough grit to keep it interesting. At least that's what Raymond Chandler & James Ellroy told me.

That drives too many Irish-Americans too. The Kennedys and their bishops are avenging the Potato Famine on the descendants of Scots-Irish whose ancestors left Britain mostly before 1840.

1.) I have to agree with you. I'm half-Irish (Me Ma is from the "The Old Country") on my mother's side. The victimhood mentality and bleeding hearts are rampant on that side of the family. I'm proud of my heritage but at the same time I'm conflicted. How can such fighters also...

LA Jews were kept out of downtown business' oil and banks. Jews couldn't get memberships at the business or country clubs - that's why they planted in WLA to make their vulgar entertainments. It wasn't that long ago - and all the stereotypes about them are in full-effect

Once again, the outsider sees a culture that is big, successful, incredibly inventive, and with world-wide appeal - And he resents it and seeks 1) alternatives to it and 2) to disparage and mock that dominant culture. The eternal outsider.
