Was Robert Putnam wrong that diverse places have less social capital? A study in Brazil found that all-black towns tend to be worse than part-black towns, much as East St. Louis is even worse than St. Louis. @DLindhttps://twitter.com/akoustov/status/1018864267402121216 …

It's common to argue that diversity undermines various public outcomes and social cohesion. But is ethnic/racial homogeneity actually beneficial to local communities in the US and other countries? Yes Putnam was wrong in implying that homogeneity in and of itself was a recipe for social capital. The society has to be comprised of high-trust/IQ people to begin with.

Many of the downsides of diversity stem from the particular groups involved rather than interaction between them—levels of trust being one example.

If his famous study only looked at (formerly) white-majority societies & cultural niches, then that was a massive oversight. Hence blames ‘diversity’ when it might more accurately be viewed from race realism POV and/or r-selection vs k-selection angle. Magic dirt vs tragic dirt!

Depends on the human capital of the populations being mixed.

“It’s common to argue”? In America it’s common to be fired and driven from polite society if you’re even suspected of insinuating there is a downside to diversity.

If you define diversity as the American Left does as simply getting rid of white people then Putman’s conclusions hold.

Why do u say "even" worse than St.Louis. W/o E. St.Louis and a couple crap hole neighborhoods it becomes quite livable.

The question is whether the black part of a mixed town is better or worse than an all-black town. Also all-black towns still embedded in an overall system of white paternalism. Detroit is more dangerous than many African cities.

Depends on how you define social capital. What’s good for the goose isn’t always good for the gander, if you catch my drift.
