Sacha Baron Cohen modeled Borat on an unintentionally funny Russian he had met. His character started out Moldovan and then became Albanian. Borat wound up Kazakh: i.e., Cossack, like the anti-Semite Cossacks pogromists in "Fiddler on the Roof," which SBC starred in at Cambridge.https://twitter.com/SidPolitics/status/1018625973103812608 …

I still think that Borat specifically satirizes post-Soviet "trashcanistans." Remember that dude who accompanies him, and they wrestle naked? (Sorry...) He's Armenian, and Armenians and Soviet Turkics have nasty ethnic feuds like you wouldn't believe...

Cossacks aren’t Kazakhs, even though the two words in Russian are very similar. They’re ethnically very different and from different places.

Cossacks started out as Russian serfs who ran away to the borderlands with the Muslims, such as the Kazakhs, and adopted a steppe horse warrior mode of life from their Muslim rivals, while staying Christian. Later, they were semi-reintegrated into Russia as Czar's light cavalry.

I don't doubt this is true, but I don't think the Cossacks had much contact with Kazakhs: other than during the Russian expansion into Central Asia, they were a long way apart. The etymology of Cossack and Kazakh share the same root, though.

Borat the character is definitely, at heart, a Pollack joke. But I'm sure once he became Kazakh, there were Armenians in LA (such as Ken Davitian) who helped add some anti-Turkic gloss too for good measure. Really interesting combo.

If you listen to Borat supposedly speaking Kazakh, it’s actually Polish expressions Mr. Cohen learned from his grandma...https://www.quora.com/Why-does-Borat-speak-Polish …

Nah, he wouldn't have done it; too much of a coward. Many Cossacks in diaspora with fists ready to fly. Borat is a Kazakh from Kazakhstan-far away and easy to mock. And the Romanian village where he filmed "Kazakhstan" sued him for lying & exploiting it. Bad PR for the cohanim...

He is playing the old routine of "smart/sophisticated jew vs. stupid/peasant goy" thus feeding the 'ethnic-ego' of his audience. With the colors reversed it would be condemned as racism and anti-semitism.
