Maybe it’s the allure of the other/unknown, but it’s infuriating how even on a show like British Bake off, the judges often ooh & ahh about non-Euro flavorings, implicitly putting down Euro as bland. I’m like: that’s the immigrants normal food, not some sort of grand achievement.

And most immigrants - even those who open restaurants - aren’t creative geniuses. A good example of that is Chinese takeout, ubiquitous and nearly uniform nationally. Even the names aren’t creative: search for “Great Wall Chinese Restaurant” and see scores come up.

Yup, outside their urban bubbles w/ hip restaurants, everywhere else is full of awful/monotonous immigrant-run restaurants. One of my local Chinese restaurants even got in trouble for illegal fishing, & from a river the state warns you shldnt eat from more than once a month.
-
Not sure how it is for you guys, but in Britain they aren't even necessarily running "ethnic" restaurants. Hence the glut of pizza and fried chicken places run by Turks and Kurds.
-
Definitely in Germany, esp close to train stations, but seemingly not as much in US, since junk food is corporate, & franchising is not exactly immi-compatible. Regardless, my town of 4,000 can live without the 4 Chinese restaurants.

It is almost ALWAYS about food w/ these ppl. Don’t worry about FGM, grooming gangs, honor killings, welfare fraud, corruption, organized crime, animal cruelty, poaching, littering, gender segregation, etc, just as long as they bring their ‘exotic’ cuisine!

Multiculturalism to these people is always about food or music. Never about anything else, of course!

Because they're sheltered from crime and educational decline.

Social scientists will finally have a large scale experiment to find out which qualities are more permanent - the inability of the people of rural PA to create fine dining or the inability of a tidal wave of refugees to maintain a livable society.

Why do I get reminded of that scene from Hitchhiker's guide where they made leafs their currency and then killed every living tree in order to prevent inflation? That's the level of economical thinking these folks show.

Great reference!
