I've been trying to test economist Piketty's theory that his r>g formula proves that Secret Old Money must be > Famous New Money by looking at who owns yachts, sports teams, backyard golf courses, etc. Not much evidence for Piketty's conviction yet ...https://twitter.com/dpinsen/status/1015673395244142600 …

Did we establish that? What old money is bigger than Zuck’s or Gates’ or Buffett’s?

For example, who owns this backyard golf course in the Hamptons with perfect reproductions of the 4th ("Redan") and 6th ("Short") at nearby National Golf Links of America? Well, CB MacDonald's old Ballyshear estate is owned by former NYC mayor Michael Bloomberg, a self-made man.pic.twitter.com/q3mY4Bz9PP

Old money keeps it by not being flash with the cash. Wealth preservation is a different process from wealth generation. Demonstrations of wealth attract interest from tax collectors. Good wealth preservers have land in lots of places. Rent, in all senses is their goal.

Yes exactly, that's how you avoid having it confiscated. That and buying reproductions of golf courses is, get this, expensive. It means you -had- money, not that you -have- money.

Though I don't doubt that Gates is in fact the richest. But 'like Gates' isn't really a class of people. More like a handful scattered around. It's plausible that there's a class of very wealthy inheritors who on average have more than the class of folk who made their own.

Sure. A bit ahistorical, and hard to prove or disprove, but plausible.

A better metric is purchases of expensive grillz en rimz en shit. Seriously, how many golf courses and sportsball teams do the Rockefellers own? How many society-changing initiatives like birth control has Larry Ellison bankrolled? How many media syndicates does he own? QED

So the new money is poor again in 3 generations whereas the old money is passing $500k per heir based on a fortune that predates the 1700s.
