I was thinking of the James Europe army band, which played Over There during WWI. Jazzy ragtime march music. That was probably repeated in the next war. Also, though jazz was popular with whites here, sophisticated Europeans took it more seriously. It had cachet.

In Langston Hughes' memoir he went all over the place, but i remember the Paris section the most. I heard a WW1 historian say that she was told if she put 'Paris' in the title it would sell twice as much.
