In late 19th century New Orleans, about a dozen affluent mulattos were sent by their white fathers to Paris to study music composition. Their return to New Orleans did a lot for the musical sophistication of the city in the 20th century (why jazz progressed father than blues).https://twitter.com/VeryJonesVery/status/1013657357275074560 …

Movies are still full of the cliche where blacks come back from Paris saying it's different over there, or wishing to go to Paris to get away from it all, or being encouraged to go to Paris because, I dunno, they don't have the KKK. Jazz musicians especially talk about it.

Nowadays they’d be sent to Harvard to study racism.

I was thinking of the James Europe army band, which played Over There during WWI. Jazzy ragtime march music. That was probably repeated in the next war. Also, though jazz was popular with whites here, sophisticated Europeans took it more seriously. It had cachet.

Funny SWPLs don't seem enthralled with jazz or even blues anymore. Now it's all blugrass roots Americana. White flight?

In Langston Hughes' memoir he went all over the place, but i remember the Paris section the most. I heard a WW1 historian say that she was told if she put 'Paris' in the title it would sell twice as much.

Many of those people from New Orleans stuying music in Paris shared the same ethnic background of General Beauregard. LOL
