Asian Indians aren't all that closely related to Europeans genetically, but Indians are about three times more like Europeans than they are like Chinese. So, the pre-1982 federal policy of lumping South Asians in the Caucasian category made more genetic sense than the current onehttps://twitter.com/shrikanth_krish/status/1011547478875885568 …

But how are Asian Indians "white"?

Fair. But then the argument must be for a separate "South Asian" category, as opposed to placing them under "whites". At any rate I don't like these racial categories 1. Are Sicilians and Norwegians that closely related? Maybe genetically, but definitely not culturally

        2. Even within India, there is great genetic diversity across castes. Your point about Indians being much closer to Europeans does not hold for all Indians. Cultural diversity is greater than genetic diversity.

        3. Why is cultural diversity among whites not discussed as much? Isn't there a massive differential in cultural capital between say a Slav in Yugoslavia vs a Norman descendant in Berkshire? Or shouldn't that matter?

I rather like to see people start using sub-continentals ( US census reclassification as well ) for those dark-skinned people. They're NOT Mongoloid-Asians/indigenous people of The Americas

You guys can HAVE the pseudo-Caucasoid-looking Sikhs and the rest in that sub-Continent ~ welsome . A formal request to @uscensusbureau ~ reclassify them out of Asian racial category which the sub-continentals DON'T belong

High caste Indians are ~2-3x closer to whites than Han, but Gondi/Munda tribals are 2x closer to Han. Bengalis, Tamils etc fall somewhere in between.
