As a layman, I kinda assumed that delaying gratification, low time preference, & intelligence were all related. Did people think that you could teach kids to not immediately eat marshmallows, & that this would make them smarter?

The point is they probably didn't think. "If we teach kids some tricks to delay gratification, they will find it easier to remember what 'perimeter' means and add it up." Obviously absurd. But you'll only notice your beliefs are absurd if you think through their consequences.
