Seems not unfair to suggest that, despite very serious competition, the two most salient events of the 20th century, long-term, were: the collapse of Catholicism after Vatican II; and the return of Khomeini to Persia in '79.

I remember that one. I'm a little bit Spenglerian, so I'm open to grand metahistorical theories, but also skeptical of taking them too seriously. On the gripping hand, it really does seem like we all get swept up in things that are bigger than any local concern.
