Maybe willpower and self-discipline contribute to affluence?https://twitter.com/alexisohanian/status/1003367749958164480 …

Spent most of my adult life believing in this Marshmallow Test, but I should've been more skeptical -- affluence (not willpower) is really behind it https://www.theatlantic.com/family/archive/2018/06/marshmallow-test/561779/ …

Mrs. @alexisohanian has plenty of affluence but even more willpower.

60 years later and willpower is still measured by Marshmallow eating?? Have yuppie kids even eaten a marshmallow before? Could marshmallow eating just measure taste or distate for marshmallows? Authors knew they'd overturn, and news would print bc it's known in culture.

That seems an easy enough hunch to confirm empirically. Do affluent people in controlled situations tend to have more self-control than people who do poorly? Compare any discrepancy between the discrepancy in their children's performance in the marshmallow test.

I suspect that it's the affluence that contributes to self-discipline. Tell Joe Duke and Joe Lord both that they'll get candy tomorrow. Kids have experience with their parents. The Lords' promises are pretty reliable. The Dukes' promises are a crapshoot.

Both of which can be outdone by outright pillage and plunder ... which is why we have police.
