At my alma mater, our athletic director always bemoaned the fact that you could instantly tell our massive campus athletic center was built circa 1988 because it gave over 50,000 sqft to nearly a dozen squash/racquetball courts and had only ~5,000 sqft for cardio equipment.

They were the fancy glass-walled ones, too, with spectator seating and everything. Meanwhile, the satellite gyms in the dorms had more space for arcs/ellipticals/treadmills/bikes. The weight rooms were nice, though. I guess we could thank Pumping Iron, etc for that.

My dad played racquetball, which I know because I used his racket to launch rocks across the neighborhood. There was a giant recreational facility on an Indian reservation near my house, and they had racquetball courts that were usually busy. This was in the 90s.
