The death of novelist Philip Roth has led to an explosion of Jews debating in the New York Times whether or not Philip Roth was good for the Jews.https://nyti.ms/2LsTTBj

But also in the New York Times, a counterpoint: Yes, Philip Roth was good for the Jews: http://www.unz.com/isteve/nyt-how-philip-roth-taught-jews-to-laugh-at-the-concept-of-jewish-privilege/ …pic.twitter.com/0s0jo4fiDB

I read Portnoy's Complaint. Was expecting high literature. Got instead masturbation and shiksa banging justifications.

And Tom. This hurts. People do not give "Mau Mau the Flack" credit. "Radical Chic" are you kidding. I get sad. Bring it up at a party, no one knows. I am not that old.

Yeah, except I barely knew who Philip Roth was - I initially thought they meant film producer JOE Roth.

The point of course being the insularity of New York Jews. I'd argue Norman Lear and Joe Roth actually have had more impact on more Americans.

"Portnoy's Complaint" should've put an end to any future Jewish involvement in writing, editing, and publishing.

Jews seem more positive about Linda Sarsour who's definitely less good for the Jews.

the one thing i never see is someone asking: is it good for the Jews to ask 'is X good for the Jews?' too much?

Well he certainly was. He was undeniably funny and intelligent. That reinforces positive stereotypes. As with Trump any alleged negatives are discounted in the personality stock price. Unsurprising. Part of the package.
