I found year-end homicide counts for 44 of the 50 biggest cities in the US. After an average 38% increase in slayings in 2020 over 2019, killings went up another 5% in 2021 for a 45% increase in mayhem during the 2 years of the Racial Reckoning:

Here's my quick count of big city homicides in 2021: Killings in the year just ended were a remarkable 45% higher than in 2019, before the Racial Reckoning.

"Overall, there is a substantial sex difference in general knowledge, with men (M=69.75) scoring higher than women (M=59.26). Using Cohen's measure of effect size, the overall difference in general knowledge scores between men and women is approximately half a standard deviation"

PayPal just informed me that they have permanently banned my account. Without giving an explicit reason why, the supervisor was extremely rude and implied that it had everything to do with my politics.

Men are just so much more nostalgic and loyal. Some guy in Uruguay watched Die Hard when he was 13 and now he'll pay to see an action movie in which Bruce Willis appears for nine minutes. Do any actresses generate that kind of loyalty among women? Maybe Bette Davis long ago ...

There are some used-to-be-more-famous actresses who get constant work in Hallmark movies, like Lacey Chabert. Nothing like the discount tough guy market, though. Someone in the thread pointed to a really great article about this:

Lots of people got mad at me in 2005 when I suggested that the extraordinarily high murder rate in New Orleans might have something to do with the local "Let the Good Times Roll" culture being worse for African Americans than the more staid cultures of, say, Atlanta or Houston.

Obviously, the democratic side in this dispute between Hungary and the European Union is that of the Prime Minister of Europe. Who can forget the overwhelming mandate the Prime Minister of Europe won in the last European Union General Election?

Let me ask you this: Q. Who was allowed to vote for the Prime Minister of Hungary? A. Nobody but Hungarians. So how can that be democratic? Q. In contrast, who was allowed to vote for the Prime Minister of Europe? A. Nobody at all. So that's much more democratic.

Is Mountain Climbing A Social Construct? - "A team of nine black climbers is attempting to scale Mount Everest to tackle the mountain’s ‘intentional lack of access for black people’ and mountaineering’s ‘colonial history’."

American elites, at least outside of Silicon Valley, are ardently feminist both in terms of expectations and whom they root for. Holmes found a whole bunch of Old White Men who were excited about helping discover The Female Steve Jobs... -

Just out in JPubE: Highly-publicized killings by police officers tend to be followed by a period of reduced self-initiated police activity (i.e., fewer stops and arrests). Effects may persist beyond the immediate aftermath.

Is mountain climbing a social construct? It might be. It never occurred to many people to climb a scary mountain. Petrarch was first recorded European climber, and it didn't become a regular hobby in Europe until 18th or 19th centuries. via

On the other hand, climbing mountains comes up in the Bible: e.g., Moses getting the Ten Commandments of Mt. Sinai and the transfiguration of Jesus on the mountain top. So it's kind of hard to say about mountain climbing before the 18th century.
