Be sure that industry will be on maneuvers to water down implementation of the Irish regs at every turn. Law makers should be vigilant; problem drinking is a highly profitable mkt sector (20% of drinkers consume 80% of the alcohol ) that industry will fight to protect. 5/5

The special status of alcohol re health warnings & ingredients is entirely down to alcohol ind corporate capture & corruption of the policy making process; a failure that must not be repeated with future legal mkts for cannabis or other drugs We can do *much* better than this 3/

Info on alcohol products (& marketing) operates on a clearly inadequate voluntary industry arrangement. Squint and you might see a microscopic health warning on some products, or a pointless link lurking in the corner of some marketing posters. 2/

A welcome move in Ireland. Amazingly, UK alcohol products are *still* the only drugs not mandated to carry health warnings (despite the toll of illness & death), & only food/bev not required to list ingredients or calorie content (or pay sugar levy) 1/

Special dispensation for Winston Churchill to drink 'indefinite' quantities of alcohol while visiting the US during prohibition It's one rule for them.....etc Still sadly true of our self confessed drug using political leaders/prohibitionist hypocrites HT

We are devastated at the death of our author and friend, Martin Amis. Our thoughts are with all his family and loved ones, especially his children and wife Isabel. He leaves a towering legacy and an indelible mark on the British cultural landscape, and will be missed enormously.

If believes criminalization is a failure & marijuana reform is an opportunity to advance equity, why is marijuana reform missing from equity action plans? My new paper calls on and the to develop an Equity Action Plan For Marijuana Reform!

A new paper from @Cat_Packer, of DEPC @OSU_Law and @DrugPolicyOrg, examines the Biden Administration’s actions on #equity and shares an opportunity to create an Equity Action Plan for #marijuanareform. Read the paper at bit.ly/43u6lrR.

"While drug scare stories get more clicks, they also stigmatise, socially exclude & dehumanise vulnerable ppl" Solid debunk of the 'monkey dust' media panic from @profhrs facts a useful counterpoint to the shameless drivel from Jack Breton MP

Pretty unhelpful Times story about ketamine this AM. It reads like an attempt to undermine serious and dedicated people working to reduce drug related harms in students through updating of Uni drugs policy/action in line with UK Drug Strategy priorities and best practice /1

Not good enough. Illiberal oppressive legislation (that you campaigned and voted against as a party) must be repealed.

The government is introducing measures by secondary legislation that were rejected when the primary legislation was going through. This makes parliamentary procedure a farce.

Secondary legislation doesn’t often grab the headlines, but it matters. The @UKHouseofLords scrutinises every scrap of it to flag concerns. Here, eagle-eyed peers highlight the use of regulations to bring in measures previously rejected by Lords in a vote. bit.ly/3VXcme3

Campaigner Anne-Marie tells says that the legal regulation of drugs isn't about condoning drug use, it's about keeping people safe. "We need to have a grown up discussion about [drugs] - we need to protect young people like Martha."

A good demonstration of the yawning abyss in understanding of policy and law making processes amongst tabloid media. Embarrassing how utterly clueless they are

1/ Treating this question in good faith because I can appreciate how someone may intuitively wonder. To begin with, no matter how large a civil service team you put together, it's not going to contain expertise on the technical detail of everything 4,000 laws cover. twitter.com/tomhfh/status/…

I dont agree with all the discussion & recommendations. Id like to have seen some analysis of the Netherlands experience & Spanish CSCs (both feel v.relevant to Germany) But for an independent expert report - its a pretty good insight, even acknowledging gaps & limitations 55/

Crucially the expert feedback section draws on the lessons from success and failing reported in the lit-review to make clearer recomendations on what is likely to deliver the health and social outcomes we ALL want to see. 54/

I dont think anyone could accuse the authors of a rose tinted or cherry picked review. Not all the news is +ve here; no policy change has universally brilliant outcomes. But its also not the doom-laden, laughably selective misery reports we see from etc 53/

The expert discussion summaries from on the key research questions usefully build on the literature review - filling in some of the gaps with a more nuanced take I think they are essential reading for a comprehensive picture (but this thread is way too long allready) 52/

The variation with results btwn N.America & Uruguay is notable, as was some of the variation with US/Canadian states/provinces; again key lesson is that regulatory design and implementation is critical in shaping outcomes. Theres no preordained outcomes of 'legalisation' 51/

The studies used were also skewed to N.America where most ofthe reform has happened & therefore research occured. This doesnt make it unuseful, but provides important context as the generally more commercial models aren the only option. 50/

- crucially IMHO not all of the studies, infact only a minority had control groups (and these are not perfect), so some effects could be due to wider changes impacting all jurisdicctions, rather than legalisation effects. 49/
