“Just passing the test didn’t guarantee a spot; there also was input from parents and teachers on whether the student possessed things like motivation, creativity, and adaptation. The threshold on the initial test was lowered slightly for disadvantaged “Plan B” students..”

The Atlantic article says "slightly" but if you look at the actual research you'll see that the threshold was lowered by a whole standard deviation.
-
It would have to be that different.

But you have to read carefully...this was mostly due to a significantly lower standard being applied to some groups ("plan B"). Might not be true otherwise.
-
um. if you read carefully you'll notice the exception was invariant between control and test periods a para or two before they, helpfully, explicitly say so -- and even add an "Importantly," for those still unclear. at least we can agree that it's important to read carefully.
-
Yes, the reduced standard was there before, but it's still a crucial part of the story and it's misleading to leave it out. Without the reduced standard the claimed effect would be smaller or nonexistent.

I totally disagree with the sterotyping prevalent within US journals & the press regarding American citizens as White vs 'Blacks & Hispanics et al' It is a divisive and inaccurate description of an individuals very diverse genetic background. FULL STOP!

It's pretty accurate.

still unsure why this would surprise anyone, tho. ideally "blind" performance metrics take discrimination out of the equation altogether so of course they'd "correctively" favor the systemically disadvantaged

Do we need a system to favourize poor and minority students ? Why ?
-
Because there are extremely intelligent children with huge potential that are hindered by the constraints of their social class etc. I don't understand how this is shocking to you.
-
These children should be supported by either charity or social welfare system. Not by a racist, discriminating selection system at universities.
#benchmarkChina -
Substantiate your claims of racism and discrimination first (almosr guaranteed you are saying this from personal "experience") and then tell me how and why the welfare system will provide the necessary help.

Harvard vs. Asians. It’s in the federal courts currently
-
If you haven't noticed, the US isn't the only country in the world. Fairly sure the court case isn't called "Harvard V Asians". The court case is also, ongoing, as you said. Even if they discriminated, that doesn't prove that university admissions are racist in the US, obviously.
-
What would prove racism besides discriminating against someone because of their race?
-
Do you understand the difference between "Harvard" and the USA? Then your question is answered.

If you oppose IQ testing you're oppressing minorities. Tests are the one way nonconforming kids can show they're as smart as others
-
More religious or ideological minorities. Apply an unbiased test and minorities get scarce.

Love this. But won't have any impact on deision-makers' mind sets. One of Plato's dialogues- Why teach a poor kid to ride horses when he'll never own one? (Timæus IIRC from 40 yrs ago.)
