I am acknowledging this is often hard, but if your reporting says Trump knew about the payment when he told the country he didn’t then he lied. How else would you describe it?

Isn’t that the less important part? the describing it? If the reporting is there, why do we also have to name it? I’m not entirely opposed, by the way. I just want to understand the logic. And as a reporter, I want to be able to apply it equally to everyone.

I appreciate the reply. But honestly I don’t think you would. My guess is that if I called Obama a liar, no matter what evidence I had, you (and Dan) would have insisted there was another explanation or motive. And then it’s a fight over semantics.

I get that press secretaries spin. That’s their job. That’s part of the deal. You don’t need to tell anyone that. But seriously, are you equating the O admin with this one? Does that honestly feel right to you?

And the measure should never be, “well if it was Bush or Obama, you guys would have creamed me for saying someone lied”. It’s simple. People either lie or they don’t. And if u don’t have the judgment or integrity to differentiate, I’m sorry, but u should do something else.

I’ve subscribed to the the @nytimes and @washingtonpost for exactly that reason. To hear what reporters find to be the unvarnished truth. If u say to yourself, well if I said this abt @joshearnest someone would have gotten mad at me, so I can’t say it now, u fail your audience

All due respect, you miss the point. The point isn’t being scared at being yelled at. (Ask Dan) The point is having an ethical standard to follow that can be applied fairly. That’s my job.

Evidently, you find it "ethical" to call an obvious, easily provable lie by softer, less offensive words because you are fearful of being called out on it or challenged about it. Thus, you are a coward.

Respectfully you are being unfair to Michael. He is one of the most scrupulously fair reporters I have ever met. He is a real pro and the points he made are respectful and worthy. The abnormality of this potus means we have to talk about the new normal directly.

Let’s not recreate the wheel here. Journalism is not the only discipline to contend with this issue (see e.g. law). Maybe: 1. Define “lie” internally & to your readers. 2. Set a standard for determining if a”lie” has occurred. 3. Apply that standard to given facts & statements.

Respect your opinion. I didn’t say he wasn’t fair. His position that it’s less important to call a thing by its name? I respectfully disagree. There may be a new normal, but if he trusts his reporting enough to share it with the public, he should be confident enough to call it.

The fact that you’re calling the “abnormality of this potus” the new normal means you have succumbed & lost perspective. NONE OF THIS IS NORMAL. Please don’t accept a lying, narcissistic criminal in the Oval Office as normal.

Respectfully, I disagree. By his own words, he is reluctant to use the word "lie" when it is clearly called for because he doesn't want to be challenged or called out. If that's not cowardice, then the word has no meaning. I refuse to accept that is the world we live in today.
