A lot of people, when you get right down to it, are suspicious of democracy, because it can lead in directions they don't like. Authoritarianism is predictable and comfortable to these people, as long as those being oppressed are people or institutions they don't like.

Just read a Graeme Wood piece on Richard Spencer that mentioned the influence of a German philosopher, Carl Schmitt, who argued, apparently, that a framework of disagreement & compromise made politics ineffective. Violent compulsion was preferable to democracy.
