Pat Buchanan no longer opposes "the Left." He opposes democracy. And says so quite clearly.http://buchanan.org/blog/why-the-authoritarian-right-is-rising-129153 …

denounces "Democracy worshippers of the West" and cites, approvingly, the Islamist view of the West: "the title the ayatollah bestowed upon us, “The Great Satan,” is not altogether undeserved"

Buchanan is faithless to American ideas and ideals and is part of a growing movement across the West that has become enamored of a creeping authoritarianism and illiberalism that has never brought the world anything other than grief, tragedy and misery. It must be confronted.

Many conservatives are hard wired to be attracted to authoritarianism. We are living through this real-time. It's scary indeed.

Yes! But not without confronting what gave it so much scope & power politicians of inequality like Mr. Hassett and the charades he goes through to "prove" that their kind of capitalism benefits capital and labor; in America, authoritarianism is inequality and dishonesty's baby...

A lot of people, when you get right down to it, are suspicious of democracy, because it can lead in directions they don't like. Authoritarianism is predictable and comfortable to these people, as long as those being oppressed are people or institutions they don't like.

Yep. Which is why it’s important to always do the thought excerice of “what if the roles were reversed?”

Just read a Graeme Wood piece on Richard Spencer that mentioned the influence of a German philosopher, Carl Schmitt, who argued, apparently, that a framework of disagreement & compromise made politics ineffective. Violent compulsion was preferable to democracy.
