Beyond appalling. There needs to be a real discussion in this country about how we teach our kids history and civics. No one should underestimate the danger of this level of ignorance particularly as the last survivors come to the end of long human lives.
What do you mean...we never taught the real truth in social studies/history class. Especially about our own history. Glossed over. Years and years of ignorance.

Locally funding education would help. Leave the federal government out of it. Chances are, the good people of Maine have different educational needs and values from the good people of California.
I’m a middle school educator in NY. We spend two months on the Holocaust in social studies & English. It is the most in depth part of the curriculum. Idk where these respondents are from. It defies credulity.
This is exactly what I was thinking. People jump so quickly to blame education. Ive never gone to or worked at a school that doesnt spend a ton of time on the holocaust.
No kidding. These kids are not being taught about how a Democracy works. Even the International Baccalaureate students are taught very little about Civics. Are we still a Democracy or just the appearance of one? Our Oligarchs own the HUGE CORPORATIONS that run our government!

Amen! That includes the civil rights movement of the 60's too. #Parkland #MarchForOurLives brought attention to that recently and 50th Anniversary of MLK 'S death. Japanese interment also. Must be taught in school!
