We had a paper route growing up. We had over 200 customers, delivered on foot 7 days a week. The highlight of the week was collecting the pay and getting tips!

I bought candy at the baseball diamonds and usually had to hit my father up for a couple bucks to pay the bill on the papers. Literacy came later, much later.

I was always jealous of my brother’s paper route. Girls couldn’t get one in those days. He always had money and a really great bike! And the neighbors gave him Christmas gifts.

I remember walking by a yard sale doing my paper route and bartering a years free paper delivery for a stereo with turn table. That route taught me hard work and a bit of salesmanship
