Worked at some point in their lives. I know for me that working hard jobs for tree trimming and landscape companies and digging holes for a pool company shaped my work ethic and fundamental values. The point she made was that the people making fun of her couldn’t get through 2.

it. It’s not just waiters and waitresses who rely on tips, It’s valet parking attendants, doormen, hotel staff etc. Before Covid I was traveling 300,000 miles a year and the reality of that life means a lot of tipping because you rely on people who work in the service industry.

One of my core convictions in life is the following. There is worth and purpose in every life and everybody who works hard and plays by the rules no matter what they do for a living deserves respect. It’s one of my top 3 Dad speeches to my kids and I mean every word of it

Agree but being a waiter shouldn't depend on the kindness of strangers. It's too precarious & stressful. They should have minimum wage. As a European, i was shocked to realise this tip system when I moved to the States.

I raised 2 kids as a bartender in The Bronx and a good tip absolutely can change someone's day. They make about 4/hr.Thank you for saying that. Tip your servers ppl. They appreciate it. I promise it makes a difference!

And housekeeping staff. I lived in hotels for years as a consultant and tipped daily. It matters to treat people with respect and appreciation. People who haven't worked those SI jobs don't get it. Everyone should have to work in service at some point.

And even if you don't have money the kind words that you offer people make a differe. You could be patient with the person who is new on the register instead of being mean. Compliment someone when the service is extraordinary nice. The small things make a difference. It matters.

Steve, I so appreciate your whole thread here. I’m a physician. Many moons ago I waited tables while in med school. We had a baby. One night I got a 40% tip. I honestly didn’t know how I could afford diapers until we got to the weekend, until that tip that night.

My son was a parking valet in college and was stiffed by Reese Witherspoon at a celebrity luncheon after he parked her expensive car. I told him she probably didn’t have any cash on her but apparently there was no mention of it or an apology-she just sauntered off without a word
