I think it goes back to Raegan and his attack on unions and allowing Murdoch to air FOX news. Gingrich, Limbaugh, McConnell have all helped stoke hatred. trump provided the match to the gasoline.
People love to think fascism couldn’t happen here. An 85 yo friend’s parents emigrated from Germany post WWII. They told their kids, “Never think Hitler couldn’t happen in America. But don’t ever say that to anyone.” The fact that they feared saying it speaks volumes.
