He preserved faith in democracy with his New Deal, led the Allies to victory and architected the postwar US led global order that endured until Trump. FDR fought hard to include African Americans in the New Deal, but relied on support from Southern Democrats for whom this was anathema. Politics is the art of the possible. It’s never pure, it’s about doing the most good you can, within the constraints you face.
