I recently wrote to the UK Biobank (haven’t heard back, yet) re: the study below and requested that the authors of that study be prevented from utilizing the UK Biobank in any future studies. My letter here: Thread… 1/

I don't watch that much television, so I was surprised to come across a commercial for this bogus company where a woman finds out out after sending in her DNA, that she has a "sensitivity" to almonds.

Shameful garbage. Not even worth critiquing.

Polygenic scores are a meaningless fantasy. Adding up genetic variants with no identifiable function to determine who will go far in school is asinine, and if you even do such a study, you are giving credence to this foolishness.

Don't know how it will play out in Iowa, but if Bernie wins big, it will be entertaining to watch the centrists rip off their "party unity" masks and toss them into the sea.

It appears that my letter to the UK Biobank had an effect and it will be more difficult for researchers to railroad non health-related studies utilizing their databases. Thanks, UK Biobank. My letter and their letter to researchers can be seen here:

Considering Charles Murray's new book comes out tomorrow it's good timing that this little side-project I took on (in the middle of my comprehsensive exams!) just came out.

Better Update: It appears that the UK Biobank is taking action. I have my initial letter and their letter to UK Biobank researchers at my blog, here: I would like to thank the UK Biobank for doing the right thing.

Update: The response from the UK Biobank added to my blog post linked above. Basically what you would expect. I think anyone considering providing their genetic or other information to the UK Biobank, should think twice about it.

Here's what the application said this study would be about: "We intend to explore different imaging and genetic characteristics to work on automatic early tumor detection, benign and malignant tumor.” Is this an honest representation?

And here's a couple more that share an application unrelated to the primary focus of the actual studies (Application # 12514). One shows us the "Brexit" gene and one shows us that people with smart genes move to the big city:

Addendum: Just to point out that this is not an isolated example, these two studies, both for genetics of "intelligence" apparently used the same UK Biobank application as the income study (10279):

For those crying about censorship: If you think that anyone can use the BioBank for whatever they want, and that it’s okay to put some BS on your BioBank application while doing an entirely unrelated study of your choosing, then, yes, I am trying to censor that.

To the authors of the silly income genetics study. Feel free to read through this and learn something about your “supporters.”

I am certainly not naive as to whether the “right thing” will be done here, but if not, I intend to make it clear to the general public in the UK, that their DNA information is also being used for studies that have little to do with “health.” 8/ END

This is not the spirit or intention of the UK Biobank and I imagine many of those who volunteered their DNA data for medical research, would have second thoughts about it, were they to be informed that it is being used for what are arguably eugenic studies. 7/

They all seem to  present convoluted health issues in their application for use of the UK Biobank, unrelated to their true focus, presumably aware that what they are really studying is not above board. 6/
