A lot of the scoffing at the idea that involuntary celibacy (the condition, not the misogynist Incel identity marker) might be real a social problem seems like past leftist dismissal of gay rights as frivolous.

The thing that I always wondered when people raised this as a (somewhat glib) explanation for Islamism was - what about women and girls? So much of what people feel is due to them is grounded in a culture of rights/entitlement, rather than absolute physical need.

I think a lot of what the Incel movement does is similar to what jihadists do: Find people with a real sense of deprivation, and steer them towards thinking of it as persecution by an oppressive system.

A lot of stuff that's essential to a non-miserable existence isn't "an absolute physical need." But some kind of sexual intimacy, at least occasionally, is pretty high up there.
