Interesting contrast in the Economist/YouGov poll. The family separation policy at the border is very unpopular: 29% approve/54% disapprove. But the broader "zero tolerance" policy of arrest/jail for all illegal crossings has plurality support: 46-37% https://d25d2506sfb94s.cloudfront.net/cumulus_uploads/document/rbrysksiud/econTabReport.pdf#page89 …

Also when given these choices for how to handle the situation: Release all & order adults to report back at later date: 19% Detain families together while awaiting court date: 44% Arrest adults/separate from kids: 12% Arrest adults AND kids, send kids to juvenile detention: 8%

Here's the full breakdown for the question: What policy do you prefer for handling families stopped crossing the border without documentation?pic.twitter.com/AO4iKOJBLc

I blame it all on the American embrace of sentimentality as a religion.

Another view: Trump reversed course because 1) The volume of reporting on this narrative was at a one month high. 2) The amount of social media opposing this narrative was massive and 3) the intensity of the narrative was huge nationwide.pic.twitter.com/paSbnN4ACu

This is media warfare. Trump's opposition expended a lot of energy "winning". But did they win? Trump is still going to lock everyone that crosses illegally up until trial. Only "win" is that about 2000 families stay together before the trial...locked up. Very clever.

Yeah, I am sure most Christians love seeing their neighbor's and friends and loved ones torn apart by drugs and gangs. Some of the families of victims never ever ever get to see their loved ones again.

Just an aside. The detention centers are run by private companies. They are much more expensive than hotels, FOLLOW THE MONEY.

How about ankle bracelets for the parents who need to return for court? Has to be cheaper than a tent city. Then they could move on but be tracked. Not perfect..but it's a solution. Good enough for Manafort.

I wonder what people think when they hear "illegal crossing." Like part of the issue here is redefining asylum seeking as illegal, which it isn't.
