"a growing body of research is finding that incarceration is ineffective at deterring crime" Bull. Shit. Do you know why everyone went to work today, instead of robbing banks? Because there are consequences to robbing banks, if you get caught.

Incarceration might not deter a criminal from committing new crimes upon release but it will sure give us a break while the criminal is locked up.

I still think the deterrent effect is much more significant. I don't think Scott Peterson would kill another pregnant wife if we released him today. But 100 other dudes thinking of killing their wives are looking at him and thinking "not worth it".
