Astonishing that so many people choose to turn a blind eye to this form of genital cutting, apparently accepting that a religious/cultural ritual is more important that the actual human rights of vulnerable newborns.https://twitter.com/NatSecSoc/status/1080784220824444928 …

    Stephen Evans added,

    National Secular Society @NatSecSoc
A two-year-old boy has died and his twin brother has been hospitalised after their genitals were cut for religious reasons at a migrant centre in Italy. This is a reminder of the risks and harm associated with the ritual #circumcision of baby boys https://www.secularism.org.uk/news/2019/01/ritual-genital-cutting-kills-boy-in-italy …

It is absolutely outrageous that parents think they have the right to perpetrate serious assault, just because the victim happens to be their offspring. Legislators must recognise this and make such assaults illegal and religious/traditional/cultural objections should be ignored.

I concur. Religion, tradition and culture should never take priority over a person's rights and wellbeing.

Good point! And surely it is a right to read adulthood as far as possible physically intact.

Indeed, all unnecessary surgery on a minor should be regarded as grievous bodily harm and no religion should be exempt.pic.twitter.com/APlZw8P5Un

I will never understand why #religion is accepted as an excuse for so many cruel ( and let's face it, just plain #stupid) practices. If someone were to mutilate a child for any other reason, they'd rightly face sanctions...but slap "#religious reasons" on it, and it's all go.
