I agree on the statement, but fail to see the role of attention (also the experiment cited in the wiki page didn’t help me understand why the process could not take place in a distracted individual ).

My hypothesis would be the attention is required at any stage in which some kind of mental or physical manipulation has to be used to make sense of a stimulus pattern which hasn’t been experienced before or which is ambiguous.
